The Planet Munnar
Set about an hour’s drive from the popular tourist destination Munnar, a road winds uphill, gradually climbing higher into the Wester Ghat mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bio-diversity hotspot, where visitors are surrounded by soaring peaks and stunningly beautiful flora and fauna. Driving past Shola, tropical and semi-evergreen forests interspersed by tea carpeted hillsides that undulate into the horizon, one arrives in Suryanelli.
A hamlet, Suryanelli is also the point of departure for guests seeking to explore the mountains and forests in the area, part of a very fragile eco -system with numerous rivulets and streams flowing through reserve forests. The forests are home to the endangered Niligiri Tahr, Tigers, Asian Elephants, Giant Squirrels, besides a fascinating variety of bird species, both, endemic and migratory.
